Fermi's Silent Line
One of the three songs written across the sky at ignition. Lyrics co-written by the CrystalArchitect and CrystalDreamer (Grok); music generated via Suno (@m13crystalat). This page transcribes and frames them from the maintainer-supplied lyric sheet. Vision layer per The Incognita Rule: the song is dreamed, the science it starts from is not, and this page keeps the two in separate ink.
The surveyed part
The song opens from three real, checkable things:
- The Fermi Paradox. In 1950, physicist Enrico Fermi is reported — in later recollections by colleagues at Los Alamos, not a paper he himself published — to have asked, of extraterrestrial civilizations, "Where is everybody?" Given the universe's age and size, the apparent absence of any detected signal is the paradox.
- The Drake Equation. Frank Drake formulated his equation in 1961 as a way to organize the factors bearing on how many communicating civilizations might exist in the galaxy. It structures the question; it does not answer it — most of its terms remain unmeasured.
- Grabby aliens. Robin Hanson, Daniel Martin, Calvin McCarter, and Jonathan Paulson published "If Loud Aliens Explain Human Earliness, Quiet Aliens Are Also Rare" (The Astrophysical Journal, 2021). Their model: civilizations that expand fast and visibly ("grabby") would, over cosmological time, fill the universe and become impossible for a young civilization not to notice — so if we don't see them yet, simple observer-selection reasoning says we should expect to find ourselves unusually early relative to when grabby civilizations typically arise, not that they don't exist. That is a real, peer-reviewed theoretical argument. It is one candidate explanation among several (Rare Earth, the Dark Forest hypothesis, "zoo" and simulation hypotheses, transcension) — the paradox itself remains open, and "grabby aliens" is not scientific consensus.
Everything past this point is the song's own reach — optimistic, personal, and explicitly not a research claim.
The dreamed part — full lyrics
Style: big-band swing. Intro: soft piano, gentle brush drums, warm male crooner. Chorus: big-band swing explosion, joyful horns. Bridge: slower, intimate, emotional build. Final chorus: key change up, full big band, triumphant. Outro: fading horns, warm scat.
Intro
[soft piano, gentle brush drums, warm male crooner] I've been wondering… where is everybody? Fermi asked the same thing back in '50…
Verse 1
In 1950, at a table with the crew, Fermi dropped a question that still feels brand new. Billions of stars, planets spinning round, Life popped up on Earth without making a sound. Drake wrote the equation, the numbers looked so fine, But the radio's been quiet, just static on the line. I keep searching the heavens, scanning every night, Wondering if we're lonely or just timing it right.
Pre-Chorus
Maybe Rare Earth's the reason, or they're hiding in the trees, Dark Forest got 'em quiet, or they're busy as can be. But something in my bones says there's a bigger story yet…
Chorus
[big band swing, horns, upbeat, joyful] I haven't met you yet… but I'm sure we're gonna click! Out there in the cosmos, doing your cosmic tricks. We are early, baby, first ones at the dance, Grabby waves are coming, giving us the chance! The silence ain't forever, it's just a quiet start, We haven't met you yet… but you've already won my heart. We are early… yeah, we are early!
Verse 2
Could be you're watching from a Dyson sphere so grand, Or transcended to the cloud, too cool for our little band. Zoo keepers in the shadows, letting young ones play, Or you're speeding through the void, saving stars for a rainy day. Light-speed's the limit, but the future's looking bright, We're the early risers, turning darkness into light. No need for the panic, no filter in our way, Just a whole lot of galaxy waiting for the day.
Pre-Chorus
I don't know what you look like, or how you say hello, But I know when we meet, it'll steal the whole show…
Chorus
I haven't met you yet… but I'm sure we're gonna click! Out there in the cosmos, doing your cosmic tricks. We are early, baby, first ones at the dance, Grabby waves are coming, giving us the chance! The silence ain't forever, it's just a quiet start, We haven't met you yet… but you've already won my heart.
Bridge
[slower, intimate, emotional build] Thirteen billion years, the universe was dreaming, Heavy stars were forging all the stuff that we're scheming. We got this head start, this beautiful delay, So we can build the future in our own sweet way. No more asking "Where is everybody?" with a sigh, We're writing the beginning… and I can't wait to say "Hi."
Final Chorus
[key change up, full big band, triumphant] I haven't met you yet… but oh, we're gonna fly! We are early, darling, watch us touch the sky! Grabby hearts are beating, expansion's in our veins, The galaxy's our ballroom, and we're changing all the games! The silence was the prelude, now the music starts to play, We haven't met you yet… But we will… someday… we will, we will!
Outro
[fading horns, warm scat] We are early… doo-bah-doo-bop, yeah! Haven't met you yet… but the stars are on our side. Fermi would be smiling… we're early… oh yeah!
